Sewage Grinder Vs Macerator for Wastewater Solids Reduction

We see a lot of objects make their way into wastewater treatment plants. Wet wipes, paper towels, cotton balls and other random objects are often flushed down the toilet (when they shouldn’t be) causing some issues.

The flushing of objects such as rages, wet wipes, hair and more can cause major blockage and will damage the pumps, valves, and processing equipment. Has your wastewater plant been considering a solid reduction system? Here, we discuss what’s best for solids reduction– sewage grinder or a macerator?

Macerators

These units are designed for in-line pipe installations, they cannot run dry and need to have a constant movement of liquid flowing through them. When installed after primary screening or a headwork system, this technology tends to provide the best results. Exclusively designed to have a refined, scissor-like cut, to any material that will flow through, the unit is better suited for small solids such as hair, wipes and plastics. However, some macerators will provide heavy debris removal traps. This is because they are not equipped or designed to cut through hard solids such as rock or metal.

Specifications

  • Can handle small solids
  • Solids must be in a liquid stream
  • Refined cut
  • Medium Coarse to Fine Cutting
  • Pressure to 87 psi
  • Lower Torque Required

Twin-shaft Grinder

Designed for both in-line pipe installations and channels, they can handle medium to large solids. They can also run dry continuously unlike like macerator counterpart.  This unit operates by having two operating shafts that have cutting blades attached. As the blades turn, they will pull the moving solids into the center, between the cutting blades and moving the solids through it without a debris trap.

Specifications

  • Can handle medium to large solids, ripping them apart
  • Runs dry, handles either wet or dry solids
  • Coarse to medium-coarse grinding
  • Pressure to 232 psi
  • Higher torque required
